Rachel skating with Nancy Kerrigan - Oct 2009 : On Friday, October 16, Rachel was given the opportunity to skate with Nancy Kerrigan, Todd Eldridge and several other skating greats who had come to Omaha to film a Halloween on Ice show with Mannheim Steamroller. They filmed the session for use during a PSA for ConAgra Foods. (I apologize for the blurriness -- in all honesty, I was so excited, I was actually trembling and just couldn't hold the camera steady. Plus, we couldn't use a flash.) It was a truly amazing experience that none of us will forget!! The cast of the show included: two-time Olympic Medalist and 1993 U.S. National Champion Nancy Kerrigan, 1996 World Champion and six-time U.S. National Champion Todd Eldredge, two-time Olympic Silver Medalist and three-time World Champion Elvis Stojko, six-time Canadian National Champion Jennifer Robinson, eight-time British National Champion and three-time Olympian Steven Cousins, two-time European Champion and 1984 Olympic Bronze Medalist Jozef Sabovcik, World Bronze Medalist and three-time U.S. Pair Champion John Zimmerman, two-time Italian National Champion and 2006 Olympian Silvia Fontana and three-time Israeli National Champion Tamar Katz.

Rachel's Dance Recital - June 2009 : Rachel showcased her ballet and tap dancing talents at her dance recital on Saturday, June 13. Her ballet number was to the song, "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now," from "Hairspray," and her tap number was "A, You're Adorable." We weren't allowed to take pictures during the recital itself, but I did manage a few shots during dress rehearsal. They had an official photographer there taking pictures during the performance and we can buy those pictures in a few weeks.

Vacation Bible School 2009 : Our church does the CUTEST Bible School programs! This year's theme was all about camping and they literally transformed the church, draping it all with blue cloths and fluffy clouds, creating forests of Christmas trees, a life-like camp fire and even a fountain with real fish! These pictures are from the final program, but I was, unfortunately, in the very back row, holding onto a very jumpy Skyler, which made for less-than-terrific pictures.

Rachel's Gold Medal Skate : Rachel participated in the Autumn Classic skating competition on Nov. 9 in Fremont, NE, where she got her first gold medal for her compulsory program! She was very excited. She got second in her free skate, which was very good, considering that we had a bit of a crisis just before she took the ice -- she had to go to the bathroom, which is quite the ordeal in her skating clothes! We made it just in time, though, and she did a nice job.

Rachel at the Girl Scout Sock Hop - Nov. 2008 : Girl Scouts had a Daddy Daughter Sock Hop on Nov. 7, 2008. Rachel and Eric were all gussied up in their 50's finest. Eric presented Rachel with a corsage, which she absolutely loved. At the party, they danced, had root beer floats, Daddy Daughter pictures and more. They had a great time...Rachel even had to show off her dancing moves when she got back.

Skating Competition - Kansas City - August 2008 : Rachel competed in the Heart of America skating tournament on August 3, 2008, in Overland Park, Kansas (a suburb of Kansas City). She did a new program and competed against girls who were quite a bit older. She ended up in 5th place. She had a good time and felt good about her performance. (Sorry the pictures aren't great -- we were pretty far away in the bleachers and weren't allowed to use flash. Plus, it's hard to watch and get the camera in focus at the same time -- cameras and ice don't always agree that well!)

Rachel Skating - July 2008 : During the summer, we tried to get Rachel to the ice skating rink as much as possible. There were many weeks where she skated nearly every day! Our favorite rink in Fremont isn't very busy in the summer and, much to Rachel's delight, she was often the only one on the ice. The first photos are of Rachel's new competition dress. We always like to have her try it out before competition time. One day, we decided to bring Rachel's best friend Haley with us to the rink. It was Haley's first time on skates, so she got to use a chair to help her balance. Since the girls were the only ones there, the rink personnel let Skyler toddle out onto the ice, too. He has loved the rink since the day he was born and has been trying to get on the ice ever since he was able to crawl, so he was in seventh heaven out there. (Mom, on the other hand, was terrified, since she was the one chasing after him. Luckily, no bones were broken in the taking of these pictures!)

Children's Theater 2008 : Kori's mom does children's theater workshops in Gothenburg and Cozad each year, and this year, Rachel and Kori were active participants in the fun! They would go to Gothenburg's practices in the morning, then go to Cozad's in the afternoon. (Rachel was in Gothenburg's production.) There were approximately 60 kids in each show and in just four days of rehearsals, they put on an hour-long musical at the end of the week. The show was "The Emperor's New Clothes," and Rachel was the Princess of Pets -- she had to bring in her pet and show it to the Emperor, only to be dismissed because he was too involved with his wardrobe. She also got to sing a small group song showcasing the Emperor's clothes and did a ribbon dance at the end of the show. The kids were all on the stage the entire time and sang the group chorus numbers -- Rachel did a great job of singing LOUDLY; we could always hear her among the other kids! Here are pictures from Cozad's performance, Gothenburg's dress rehearsal and also their performance. Rachel is in the Gburg show, wearing the blue dress in the front row. Rachel at Trails & Rails Museum - July 2008 : Rachel and Kori have been reading the "Little House on the Prairie" books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Rachel is really into them and is fascinated by the world that used to be, so on our way home from Gothenburg after Children's Theater, we stopped at the Trails & Rails Museum in Kearney. The museum features an old train station, UP train with steam engine as well as several buildings -- a large two story house, a one-room school house, an old church, a log cabin/soddy, livery barn and a farm house. Rachel really enjoyed the museum and was amazed at how people used to live.

Rachel at Vacation Bible School 2008 : Rachel went to Vacation Bible School in June 2008. The theme for the week was Beach Party Blast and everything had a beach theme. The kids learned about the Beattitudes and all their songs had a Beach Boys sound to them. The church's gym was transformed into a beach, with a beach shack in the middle of the room. Each morning the kids met their teacher at their beach umbrella and fleece blanket "beach". They made really cute beach themed crafts and just had a great time every day! These photos are from her program on the last day of VBS. After the program, the kids got to go out on the church lawn and play on the Slip-n-Slide. I also took some pictures of the crafts she made -- they were so cute!

Rachel at Art Class - June 2008 : Kori, Rachel and Skyler went to Gothenburg for a week while Kori's mom was teaching a summer art class. Rachel got to take part in the class, where she made hand-built clay pots and pots thrown on the potter's wheel. She also just had fun painting, working with air-dry clay and more. (Kori also got involved, helping kids "throw" pots on the wheel.) Rachel tried her hand at photography, too, grabbing Kori's camera and doing a "photo essay" while Grandma Trudy worked on the potter's wheel. All the pictures of Kori's mom were taken by Rachel...and I didn't do any editing on them at all -- they are just as she took them! I think she's got a good eye for photography! We were also taking some pictures to send to the newspaper, so that's why there are pictures of the other kids.)

Rachel's Skating Competition - March 2008 : Rachel skated in a competition in Sioux Center, Iowa on March 15, 2008, skating her Tinkerbell program for the first time. There was only one other skater in her group, a very good skater who provided some stiff competition. Rachel ended up in first place -- her first time on the top step of the podium. She couldn't have been more excited!

Rachel - Costume Day at Dance Class : Rachel got to try on her costume for her dance recital this week. They are doing a medley from "Aladdin" so she gets to dress up like Jasmine. She loved her costume and was dancing and jumping around. They had the kids show their parents the dance; unfortunately I was in the back of the room instead of the front, but I did try to get some photos whenever she turned around.

Rachel at "Beauty & the Beast" : Kori took Rachel to North Platte Community Playhouse's production of "Beauty and the Beast." Rachel absolutely loved the show and during the last song, stood up and shouted "Bravo! Bravo! Go Belle!" causing quite a few giggles in the audience and even a few on stage. She got to meet the cast following the performance and was especially excited to meet Belle in person.

Rachel's 5th Birthday Party : Hard to believe, I know, but Rachel turned 5 on February 7. She had a very special birthday party at the Rose Theater where all her friends were invited to come in their princess, prince and pirate garb. It was quite a windy day, so Princess Rachel's crown was blown from her head while trying to get in the building. Luckily she unwrapped another one during the party, but her hair was quite disheveled for the event. The party featured "The Fairy Godmother" (Grandma Trudy) who performed a special magic show. The kids made their own castle pop-up books, enjoyed a huge castle cake and played freeze dance. Unfortunately, our camera ran out of batteries just minutes after the party started. :-( Thanks to Kori's mom who sent us the photos she took!

January 2008 Skating Competition : Rachel's last skating competition for the 2007-2008 season was a gangbuster! She did fantastic! There were five kids in her event and she ended up in 2nd place! HURRAY! She really did a great job. I think it's because she had her own private cheering section this time around -- we were so glad Sara, Rob, Chris, Maggie, Josh and Natalie were able to come and watch! Rachel's Holiday Dance Program : Rachel's ballet and tap class had a little mini program for the parents on Dec. 3. When she arrived, the teacher surprised the girls with tutus and marabou headbands. They were cute as the dickens!! (You'll notice Rachel's headband only lasted about halfway through the class.) I think I probably drove the other parents crazy -- I had no idea how many pictures I took until I got home and downloaded them! Just call me paparazzi mom!! Some of the pictures aren't the greatest as I was sitting in the back row and had to duck and dodge between people in the front...after all these pictures, I bet they all *wished* I'd gotten a front row seat!! Oh well!

Rachel's Skating Competition - Sept 2007 : On Sunday, Sept. 23, Rachel participated in the Pony Express Championship Figure Skating Competition in St. Joseph, Missouri. This was her first time performing a skating program to music and we think she did a great job!! Her song was a jazzy version of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and she certainly glittered on the ice! (Kori made her dress....five yards of rhinestone chain throughout the costume and 21 circles of organza on the skirt!!!) She did pretty well with her program. There were some problems with her music at the beginning, and she had to stand perfectly still for about 2-3 minutes, then the music stuttered right at the beginning and you could tell she didn't know exactly what she should do. She took her first few steps, then had a slight stumble, but got right back up and finished strong! At the end, she was a total ham, spontaneously blowing kisses to the judges and audiences, flashing "I Love You" in sign language and bowing. We weren't sure we would ever get her off the ice! In the end, she ended up on the podium in 3rd place. (And yes, there were more than 3 skaters!) Her compulsory competition (no music) kinda fell apart, but she got through it and ended up in 4th place. She was pretty tired at this point -- it had been a long day and she kinda got confused about what she was supposed to do. But she got a 4th place medal for her efforts and we are amazed at how far she has come in just one year!

Rachel's First Day of Preschool - August 2007 : Rachel was so excited for her first day of preschool, she was up and dressed before Eric and I even got out of bed! She was so proud to get to carry a backpack just like the "big kids" and could hardly believe it when she found out she got to play on the "big kids" playground! As for the three of us left behind, well, Skyler was pretty fussy all morning, not having his daily "Rachel cuddle" (he absolutely adores her and usually fusses in the morning until she wakes up and talks to him), and I kept catching Buzz in his pre-pounce stance, just waiting for her to come around the corner so they could play tag...eventually, he would realize Rachel wasn't coming and would then go to another spot, hoping that she'll be there instead. Rachel had a great time at preschool and has many wonderful friends. Every day as we leave, everyone asks if she can play.

Rachel Ice Skating 2007 : Rachel had her second skating competition on Jan. 21. She improved a great deal -- she was especially proud of her swizzles and backward wiggles! She ended up in fifth place and was very proud! (Unfortunately, our camera doesn't have a big zoom so we couldn't get very closeup shots of her on the ice!) Her My Twinn doll came along in her very own skating dress. She had a great time and was excited to earn a purple ribbon! UPDATE 4/2/07: Rachel continues to skate and is getting better by leaps and bounds -- literally! Recent accomplishments include spins and skating on one foot. Her Rachel dolly often accompanies us to the rink, although dolly has to sit on the sidelines with Mommy and watch, rather than skating alongside Rachel. She has a great time and is thoroughly enjoying herself.

Rachel at Swimming Lessons : Rachel has started taking swimming lessons once a week at Kids Body Shop. She really looks forward to the lessons each week and is getting more comfortable in the water. She is funny though -- while the other kids plug their noses when then go under the water, Rachel closes her eyes and then covers her eyes with her hands!! Rachel's 4th Birthday : For Rachel's 4th birthday party, she wanted to have a skating party. We used a "Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus" theme, since the movie features Barbie ice skating. (The movie was actually what turned Rachel on to ice skating in the first place.) It was a busy weekend, so many of the invitees had other plans, but those that were able to make it had a great time skating! Rachel's skating coach, Jenny, was available to help newbies on the ice, and before too long, everyone was pretty steady on their skates. We then opened presents and had cake and ice cream in the rink's party room. It was a great time overall and I think it was a day Rachel will remember for a long time.

Rachel at Ice Skating 2006 : Rachel has started taking figure skating lessons. We were absolutely amazed at the entire process! The pictures below are her very first lesson. She had several falls, but by the end of the hour, she was able to skate about half way across the width of the rink, just beaming from ear to ear because she was SOOO proud! Mom and Dad were cheering as if she'd landed a triple axel! UPDATE 11/12/06: Rachel had her first skating competition today and did a great job, if I do say so myself! She was the youngest in the competition (everyone else in her group was 5 and a full head taller than her) and she did her routine nearly perfectly. She ended up in 4th place and was very excited to get a ribbon (although she keeps calling it her "gold medal"). Here are some pictures from the event -- we weren't allowed to take flash photos during her program, but we did videotape it, so we will try to pull some photos from the video -- we'll post those here once we get them.) They had a professional photographer taking pictures on the medals podium, so we'll scan those and put those up when we get them, too. (Funny note -- when they called her to be in the picture, Rachel hopped right up to the 1st place platform...she was sure she was top banana! They wanted her to stand on the floor, but she insisted on being on the platform, so they compromised and had her stand next to 3rd place.) (Oh -- and just FYI, Blade & Edge is the name of the figure skating club she belongs to AND the sponsor of today's competition -- that's why that logo is in the background.) Thanks to Kori's brother Rob for the pictures at the end -- these were taken at Rachel's weekly group skating lesson that she attends with cousin Maggie. Rachel is in all black and Maggie is wearing the grey hoodie. Michelle Kwan, eat your heart out!! :-D

Rachel at Soccer 2006 : Life begins at 3! Rachel's first official extracurricular activity is SOCCER! She meets with her "team" once a week to run drills and play various training games. (Recognizing that 3-year-olds don't always like to share, instead of playing actual soccer, they play games where EVERYONE gets to kick the ball.) She loves it and shows signs that she has similar soccer talent as her daddy. :-)

We were doing our best to keep her "halo" on tight, but toward the end, she wanted nothing to do with it -- she was more interested in crawling in the bushes, jumping off the rocks and rolling in the "pool." Rachel's April 2006 Pictures : Rachel had lots of fun with her April pictures -- yes, the ducks are real. The were nibbling on her toes and even on her jeans. I wish you could have heard her giggle! She fell off the bed earlier in the day and scratched her cheek -- the photographer said she could take that out in the final prints.
